Hello I'm Shin Jeong-Cheol, author of "The Power of Note-Taking"
I want to start my talk with a question What is the goal of life?
One of you said "happiness" I also had thought it was happiness
The definition of happiness is quite different for each person My definition was 'To live life enjoyably'
So I had sought to please myself since my 20s So during the DSLR camera boom,
I joined a photography club and took pictures every week and when I fell in love with movies,
I visited the Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, Jaecheon Music Film Festival, Jeonju International Film Festival,
and watched a lot of movies I also joined social dance and swing dancing clubs
and practiced dancing every weekend and performed onstage Probably many of you like computer games
I also love them This is the game I loved
I went dragon hunting with over 100 guild members every night This is my character
In Korea, many male players play female characters, but in other countries, players usually play same-gender characters
So when I played the game on a foreign server, many foreign guys sent me messages, thinking that I was a woman
Like these examples, I always had a hobby to enjoy The specifics kept changing but there was always a hobby in my life
So I spent time with people every weekend, with hobby club people, going places
I was always enjoying life So my colleagues asked me
how I could have so many hobbies and they said I looked joyful
I also thought that I was quite happy and fulfilled However, when I entered my 30s, from some point,
when I was in my room alone after having fun during the weekend, I started to feel worried and empty
At first I didn't understand Then, later, I watched a lecture clip
In the video, musician Nam Koong Yeon said this: "These days, young people go to concerts and admire the artists' songs,"
"go to movies and admire the actors' acting," "seek out restaurants and admire delicious foods"
"They're living lives with only exclamation points" After hearing this, I realized,
'Ah! I've been living that kind of life' 'I'm only consuming what others made, not making anything myself'
That's what I realized In his book, "Discourse," Mr. Shin Young Bok wrote,
"One cannot build up his identity through consumption" "One's identity is built through production"
A life of exclamation points may be happy at times, but it is empty
That is because you may be delighted when you are admiring something, but it doesn't have a real effect on your life
There is nothing that changes the value of your life So after I realized that my life is only full of exclamation points
I thought to myself, 'I should produce something that is mine'
The first thing I tried was blogging I tried to write a post in my blog
Here you can see a message saying, "There are no posts" I couldn't even write five lines
I tried to write a few times, but finally gave up and neglected the blog
So it says "this blog is being dismantled" So now, let me ask a question
Do I look like I am good at studying? (Yes)
As a student, my nickname was "nerdy nerd" I didn't like studying, actually
But many people say I look like I'm good at studying In a way, I appreciate it
I actually was a fairly good student when I was in school Despite that, after I went out into the world,
I could not write a single blog post expressing my thoughts So I found out that
'I cannot create my thing only by memorizing or cramming' 'By cramming others' knowledge into my head,'
'I cannot create my own thing' That knowledge that I crammed in also goes away quickly
When you study at the last minute, it just disappears after the test I found out that we can't create our own thing
through the memorization we did at school Then one day, I bought a notebook
and started taking notes I put down the underlined sentences while I was reading
I wrote down some thoughts that popped up while I was reading Also, I expressed the book's content as drawings
I took notes to clarify my thoughts before posting them on the blog Before, when I went to seminars, I just listened
But from this point, I tried to write down what the speaker was saying I did this for two years constantly
Then, something amazing happened after two years I started writing with the notes I took
These are my notes from a lecture by the cartoonist Yoon Tae Ho In his lecture,
Mr. Yoon said he felt unsure of himself since his childhood Because he had skin allergies when he was young,
he couldn't go out and play So he lacked confidence because he had different skin
And even after he became a cartoonist - He now writes stories such as "Misaeng"
that really speak to many readers But in his early days, he himself thought his stories were awful
Despite his talent for drawing, his inability to write stories made him feel inferior
But when Mr. Yoon Tae Ho felt discouraged, he did not evade his feelings but overcame them step by step
After hearing that lecture, I thought that I should connect his story
to Adlerian psychology and write an essay So after that lecture,
I found books on Adlerian psychology and took notes as I read them
I wrote down every thought that came up After gathering those thoughts,
I wrote an article called "The Way to Meet Your Sense of Inferiority" I sent it to LG Electronics' blog
and the reaction was really good So if you search for Yoon Tae Ho on the Internet
this article comes up on the top as the most-read one Have you all seen the animated film "Frozen"?
I had a great time watching it with my oldest kid as well The night I came back home after watching "Frozen",
I searched for the song "Let it Go" on YouTube and found a video of it I watched that over and over again
Repeatedly listening to it, the lyrics seemed so touching So I printed out the lyrics,
read them repeatedly, and took notes of any thoughts that came to me I wrote another article with these thoughts
It was called "The Hidden Meaning Behind the Song 'Let it Go'" Listening to "Let it Go", you can see how Elsa grew up
I connected her childhood with Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality I uploaded this article to my blog
and it became the portal site's top editor-recommended article in the "arts" field
Normally, it's hard to get that spot with anything but a review of a TV drama or variety show
But then my post topped the list Over 10,000 visitors visited my blog for the first time
(applause) Since I started taking notes,
an increasing number of people are reading my posts The numbers of visitors were only in double or triple digits before then
Maybe 10, 20, 50 people visited After starting to take notes and write with the notes,
lots of people started reading my postings In October 2014, I got over a million visitors to my blog
Now, it is slightly over 2 million Now, you know there are curation sites
My postings are also published on those sites So more people are reading my posts through those curation sites
What I felt while taking notes is that I was only a consumer of the things other people created,
but now I have become a creator of information To be honest, everyone knows about taking notes
Anyone can do it How could it have this effect? Let me tell you
You remember I told you that I lived a life full of exclamation points
The notes made up one thing that my life was missing What was it?
Yes, you're right It was a question mark
You cannot create your own content by simply absorbing others' By wondering about others' content with a question mark,
and adding your own thoughts to it, you can create your own content, I found
Writing would be an example What would be the difference between
one who writes and one who cannot? It's the amount of thoughts one has accumulated
Writing only becomes possible after thoughts have been accumulated You cannot write something from reading books about writing
Writing comes from a mind that is full of thoughts So, you should keep the ideas you get in your daily lives
Taking notes is a tool for keeping these ideas The knowledge we get from books or school are external stimuli
By collecting and systemizing the ideas, the external stimuli, then you can finally create your own knowledge
Notes are what you need to keep the ideas Genuine study means reacting to stimuli
and stacking up the ideas provoked, not just stuffing the stimuli into your head
Collecting your own ideas will lead to creating your own contents People who create their own contents, people who write,
have stressed the importance of taking notes Darwin, Montaigne, Jung Yak Yong - these great minds took notes diligently
Notes were an open secret for creators and writers from the past So I brought my notebook Its pages were shown on the screen
I gathered my thoughts into this notebook If I plant the seed of my thoughts by writing down notes in this,
as time goes by, those thoughts grow to become an article and those articles accumulate
That's how I was able to write a book (applause)
You have all come here to listen to me talk about studying Why do we study?
Why do we study? Isn't it because we want to live a better life?
If you want to live a better life, you have to be able to answer the question of what kind of life you want
That is, you should know what you want to do I love the Shin Hae Chul song "What Do You Really Want"
Whenever I hear this song, I feel as if it is talking to me Until my mid-30s I didn't know what I really wanted to do
People who don’t know what they want to do are people who have not been closely observing themselves
I wanted to make an index of the notes that I've taken for two years So I looked over the subjects of my notes page after page
and on a Google spreadsheet, I made an index of all the notes that I've made
During the process of categorizing the sources and subjects of my notes I was able to see how I lived, what interests I had,
and what I liked, over a two-year period Through these notes, I was able to observe myself
If you want to find what you want to do you should observe your reactions to various experiences
Like, 'Am I happy with this job?' 'Or am I forcing myself to do this?'
'Am I enduring this while having negative feelings?' You have to observe your reactions
Observing is not simple, so you need to record your reactions When we try to write something,
we start to observe, because we have to create a thing So, if you make a habit of observing your reactions and emotions in notes,
you can know yourself better I think the true meaning of studying
starts from observing and recording my reactions, thoughts, and emotions about the world
What would you need to change your life? You would need to discover what you want and what you are currently lacking
To do this, you have to look at how you live in the present That is why you need to observe
You have to be able to look at your current self through written records The secret power of notes is
to change myself into an observer of my life If you wanted to enrich your life through study,
where would you start? You have to get used to observing your thoughts and emotions
To you who came here today to learn about the true meaning of studying, for studying that enriches your lives,
I suggest you make a habit of observing and taking notes about your thoughts and emotions in every moment of your lives
